I am in that sad group that cannot unlock the bootloader on 4.1.2, so I was very happy to see the post above.

I tried to take the update to KK but it fails. I used VooDoo Root Keeper to temp unroot before letting the update run, but no luck.

What did I miss? I am still running stock 4.1.2, with nothing special loaded. No system apps were deleted or frozen. I really want to upgrade to KK, root and unlock before they fix it.

Any help?

Thanks in advance,

Thanks for the quick reply. I've read through everything.

My PC is a corp laptop running Java 1.6 and I can't get admin rights to update it.

Would a USB 1.0 port work? I have an OLD laptop collecting dust I could use.

Would a factory reset get me back to a place where I can take the KK update?

Thanks.

Factory reset does nothing but delete the data partition.

I doubt USB1 will work.

I guess I'll try to set up the old laptop and see what happens.

I have a mac, but don't feel comfortable enough with my technical skills. Some of the mac instructions I don't understand and the moto drivers don't work on a mac. I'll keep trying to learn more re: the mac, but I really don't want to brick my phone.

Thanks

The House of Moto supports mac.  No drivers are required on unix based systems.  It just requires knowing how to work with scripts in terminal.

The 'working with scripts' part is where my skills are weak.

I am hesitant to try the old laptop due to the USB1 port.

As I understand it, the main difference between USB1 and USB2 is speed. Is there another reason it may not work?

If the process is interrupted is it likely to brick my phone?

Well, here's the thing...you have a working windows machine with a USB 2 port, yes? It just doesn't have Java 7?  If that's the case, just do this:

o) Extract the FXZ to a folder

o) Open the XML file in the extracted folder with Notepad++

o) Remove the erase userdata line

o) Save it

o) Load up RSD

o) Open the XML file you just edited in RSD

o) Flash away.

Done.

Hit a snag...

"Load up RSD" means run RSDFlasher, correct?

I get this error "Could not find the main class: com.samuri.rsd.RSDflasher. Program will exit"

Um, no.  I mean load RSD Lite 6.1.6 and just use that to flash.  I know the RSD Flasher isn't going to work as I wrote it.  :)  I was just giving you an alternate way to flash the FXZ with a KEEP DATA style script to get you moving along without worrying about java.  (As a Java developer, though, it pains me greatly to see people still rocking Java 6 given that support stopped over a year ago and there are security flaws in it that remain unpatched.  That's just bad practice right there.)

Ah, ok... well I'm still stuck as I cannot install RSDLite either. For the same reason I can't update to Java 1.7, I don't have admin rights on my corp laptop.

Looking for a portable version now...

Get the House of Moto download.  RSD is included in there as a sub-folder.

ok, I opened RSD Lite and got windows firewall warning, but it opened up ok.

Can I follow the instructions in the RSD Flasher post here?

No, you just need to follow the directions I posted above.  Extract the FXZ, edit the XML file, then open the modified XML with RSD Lite and flash it.  If you don't edit the XML file before flashing, it'll erase your data partition so I'd be careful to remove the erase userdata line from the XML.

ok, I have edited the XML file to remove that one line and copied everything on the phone to my PC.

I have RSD lite open and the file selected.

Are there any settings in RSD that need to be set?

Next is AP Fastboot mode and click start?

Trying not be nervous here.... lol

Nothing in RSD.  As long as it sees your phone (yes, AP Fastboot mode and connected to a USB 2 port) you're good to go.

Sweet!

Worked perfectly. I am now on 4.4.2

Thanks for your help! I hope all my questions will help the next guy. Thanks for answering them.

Next step is root and unlock.
