damn I wish I had known about Developer and non-developer phones. I had a Droidx v2.3.4 and could not root it,so yesterday I bought a Moto Razr Maxx hd,and I see, and just found your site, that it cant be rooted,,wow. so I am in for$20 and maybe more.
you're on 4.1.1 you can still root. I just got a RAZR M for my girlfriend Friday and it's still on 4.1.1. Just saying.

It's an interesting question. Verizon seems pretty hard up on not wanting unlocked phones on their network. If they won't sell them, they certainly can tell us they won't activate one. I don't support dev phones myself. I prefer phones that are either unlockable or have been unlocked by the development community. To me, buying dev phones is playing right into their hands.
I agree with this person about Google/Motorola. Google owns Motorola and for them to continue to inhibit access to an open source operating systems is enough for me to switch brands in the future. I would also suggest that every phone has an exploit, they will never be able to lock it down entirely, especially with a sideload adb commands from Linux Shell. Anyway, I am at $20 and going to raise it soon, Droid Razr HD 4.1.2 . Perhaps Dan can update us on his progress and let me know where to donate. I am also curious which Android Phone brands are easily exploitable, please advise. Cheers

Switching brands will hardly help. You need to switch carriers. VZW is preventing Samsung as well as HTC from allowing unlockable bootloaders as well.I agree with this person about Google/Motorola. It's all about the money. With an unlocked phone you can work around paying for Wi-Fi tethering. Problem is no one has a network as good on coverage as Verizon. If course I could be wrong about this. But I have a friend on Sprint and he always gets dropped. Even in large metropolitan areas.
