So today I decided to see what was in this app. Besides seeing my personal movies there was also a rental section. When I clicked on the Rental tab it said "Rentals are not available on your device because it appears to be Rooted." Anyone else notice this? What the hell is that all about?

Yep... it pretty much is as it appears. No love renting movies on rooted devices. You can always use voodoo to temp-unroot ... not ideal but it works.

Wow, what a shame. Thanks for the work around tip.

As a follow up question does this mean big red now knows who is Rooted? Are they tracking rooted phones now?

Well we know that Moto tracks it if you call for support directly, but no... vzw doesn't actively track it. This particular event is actually a Google thing. And for good reason. Everyone knows that with root, you could easily just intercept the rented content and steal the movie. Not to say that all rooted users would do that, bit that's why they disallow root for rented movie playback.

Hope that clarifies it.

Agreed; good explanation. There have been a few instances of this lately, and they all have been legitimate fears by the owners of the applications. With rooted users having access to SQL editors, and just the ability to over-write things in the root filesystem, there is unacceptable risk there.

Eventually app developers will start using encrypted data stores to minimize/eliminate the issue.
