To prevent the screen from locking or sleeping, go into developer options and check "stay awake" .... it may help....
Also.... if you backed up your phone with Google, .... run root prior to signing in to Google account as it will restore apps and settings....

Typically what causes the failure is in the smart actions step of the process.... or the phone "sleeping" or screen locking in the middle of it..... or the phone is not in MTP mode.......

I hope people are still checking this as I have an odd problem. I bought a vzw razr maxx off of ebay for at the time I thought a decent price of 70 dollars with the only caveat that the buttons on the bottom were finicky sometimes. I received the phone and turned it on only to notice that the phone would just restart itself after about three minutes or so of being on. I immediately thought it was a software problem so I looked into solutions online and found this utility. I boot into fastboot mode and the utility runs through it's steps with no problem. Everything states that it completed "OK" and it restarts itself, flashes the radio, and then begins the startup process. Now previously the boot sequence had been the red diamond logo and it would say droid. Now though it is just the word droid in silver and it refused to boot past this. Any help would be appreciated as I hope I didn't get swindled off of ebay.

First things to try is Wiping cache and Dalvik. Then a Factory reset.

Yeah I've done that a few times before and after the succesful flash. I've also tried to fastboot flash the boot.img again, but don't have the option of fastboot when the usb is in but that might be a locked device issue.

Don't have fastboot option?.....
Fastboot is not a USB option.... you have to manually put phone in fastboot mode....
.... you should be having fun ...

On a related note can anyone tell me what the default boot screen looks like on this utility flash? Is it the diamond where a voice says "droid" or is it just the word droid? I'm getting just the word "droid" and I think it may be incorrect.

You should see the white M on red circle .... (boot logo) ..... then the animation starts with "droid" (with the sound "drrrrooooiiiidddd!!"....then a red flash.... then the "morphing droid eye" ... then the droid eye ..... hopefully that makes senseOn a related note can anyone tell me what the default boot screen looks like on this utility flash? Well i've had some solid progress and got it booted for the first time in two days. Unfortunately two of my bottom buttons (menu, home) no longer work and my color is all kinds of wonky. Is there a fix for the buttons on the bottom of the phone?

As far as the colors being funky, you could try to re run the utility.... bit I fear you may have a hardware damaged phone.... it is appearing to me like either and extreme overheat damage or water damage.....
The only way to check water damage is to disassemble the phone and check the moisture indicator .....
