Not for OG Razr/Maxx XT-912
So, a user by the name of radiohead7778580 over at XDA a few months ago, figured out a way to flash new radio firmware in RSD Lite that will allow RAZR HD users to bypass the "No US GSM" network block. This hack allows users of the RAZR HD/MAXX to use US GSM networks (T-Mobile and AT&T). Although it's not a late-breaking development, he's been working hard improving this modification and we want you all to have the information necessary to accomplish this if you so choose. Keep in mind, you do need an active T-Mobile or AT&T Sim card for this to work.
As usual, we're not responsible for any damage caused to your phone. You know the deal. There are, however, a few things to note:
1- Speed : Speeds from doing this process are, well, not what you would get if you had an actual AT&T/T-Mobile device. Users are reporting speeds in the 3G/HSPA+ range with a few users seeing AT&T LTE speeds briefly. So, in short, you won't see the blazing speeds that you would see if you were actually using a phone from those carriers. May not matter to some, but worth mentioning. A lot of your speed will be dependent on if you are in a 1900Mhz "refarmed" area which means the old 1900Mhz band has been repurposed for use with HSPA+. If this is the case, you may have some trouble picking up the HSPA+ signal versus someone who is on a non-farmed HSPA+ signal area. Most people are flirting between Edge, H, H+ and 3G.
2- There are 2 versions : There are 2 versions of this software: Wipe and Non-Wipe. Self-explanatory, the wipe version will wipe the data on your phone whereas the non wipe wont.
Files:
Wipe:
No Wipe:
Installation:
Download the appropriate version (Wipe/No Wipe)
Open up RSD Lite
Ensure your phone is in AP Fastboot mode and you have the current moto drivers installed.
Connect the phone to your computer.
In RSD Lite, navigate to the zip file you downloaded and select it.
Click "Start" and wait for RSD Lite to flash the radio.
Once the phone boots navigate to Settings -> Mobile Networks and change the Network Type to GSM/UMTS
At the bottom of the page, search for networks and select "MARITIME 3G"
Tips:
Performing these 2 build.prop edits make make the transition smoother. One turns LTE off, the other sets the default network to GSM
Also, some users were met with an "Unknown Sim error". Many were fixed by removing /system/app/VZWPhoneService.apk and /system/app/VZWPhoneService.odex.
So, have any of you given this a try? Thinking about it? Let us know how it works!
